Things I Learned From My Dog

Things I learned from my dog
never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in my face to be pure ecstasy.
When loved ones come home, I will always run to greet them.
Be loyal.
Never pretends to be something I am not.
When someone is having a bad day, I will be silent, sit close by, and comfort them gently.
Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
Wag more, bark less.
On hot days, take lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

House Training A Young Puppy

House training a young puppy is easier to than an older dog. Some excellent things to remember when you want to house train a dog fast include the value of crate training. When the dog has a desire to go to the bathroom, he will make it known by barking while he is in the crate.
You will also know that he probably has to pee when you see him sniffing the crate or walking around in a circle. These are tell tale signs that he needs to go. When you see these things take your dog for a walk outside.

It is vital to bring your dog to the same spot during his walk outside everyday when you see that he has to go to the bathroom. If you make it a point to be home with your dog and be available yourself or have someone that can take your dog outside after its meals, playtime and naps, you will be able to house train a dog fast.

Just remember to be consistent and give positive reinforcement to encourage your dog when he has made the correct choice of going outside. NEVER rub your dogs nose in their mistake when the occasional accident happens. Positive training and paying close attention to your dog will always give the best results.

Be Healthy PlayMore With Pets

Pets make us more social. Pets have personalities and provide companionship to our highly social human species. They force us to socialize when they greet us in the doorway, engage us in play, or look for praise. And pets also make us more social by giving us opportunities to socialize with other pet owners and meet new people.

Pets improve our health. Pets may actually improve our physical health, although it is not entirely clear why. One hypothesis is that people who have pets that need to be walked end up exercising more. There is also some medical evidence that people with pets have lower blood pressure and cholesterol and see the doctor less often than their non-pet owning counterparts.

Pets soothe us. An interesting experimental study showed that women given a stressful mental exercise were soothed more by a pet than the presence of a friend. Why? Even our friends make judgments about us. Pets provide stress relief through physical contact and unconditional positive regard. In addition, pets can also provide relief from feelings of loneliness.

Pets promote empathy and bonding. Children with strong bonds to pets score higher on empathy scales than children without pets. Pets also cultivate a nurturing spirit from the adults who take care of them. We learn to empathize with our pets' feelings, signs of hunger, et cetera, because they are not able to speak for themselves. A previous PT Blogger cited a 2003 study in the Veterinary Journal that showed how the act of touching or petting an animal releases the mammalian hormone Oxytocin. This hormone increases feelings of bonding, sparking a similar connection as with a child, family member, or close friend.

For those of you who do not currently have pets, consider the benefits of their companionship through ownership, pet-sitting, or playing with other people's pets.

I've seen a look in dog's eyes, a quickly vanishing look of amazed contempt, and I am convinced that basically dogs think humans are nuts.

Dog Training Tips

Some new dog owners get a little overwhelmed with dog training. The dog potty training methods are usually the first lessons in dog training. Dog house training hits the top of the list as soon as an "accident" occurs. Then crate training a dog is next due to the potty problem and maybe some problems with chewing or destructive behavior. Which leads us to dog obedience training, which can solve both potty and chewing problems.

Dog leash training is essential so you can control your dog in public places. Using a dog leash to help in obedience training is recommended by every dog trainer I've ever met. Learning how to use a leash to help you in your dog training is very important.

The best dog training tip I ever got was to understand the power of positive
dog training is much more effective than punishment based training. Any
dog training basics should incorporate positive rather than negative
reinforcement.

1. Patience and consistency are key elements in any dog training activity.
Dogs are much like people in they have different levels of learning abilities.
Some are fast learners, some need more attention and repetition.

2. Use positive dog training. Positive reinforcement works better than
punishment. Rewarding good behavior will be the most effective tool you
have in training your dog. If a dog is particularly aggressive, you may have
to scold or even use a loud noise to establish unacceptable behavior but use
sparingly or it may have the opposite effect.

3. There are many ways to train a dog successfully. Use what works best for
you and your dog. Always consider the breed (even in a mixed dog), it can be
a big factor in training. Most dogs have natural traits that can be used to
your advantage, or work against you.

4. Behavior problems are usually acquired. Don't ignore any behavior
problems, even when you're working with a young puppy. Most bad habits
can be stopped in their tracks with a little foresight and planning. You can't
start dog behavior training too early.

5. Try to make any training session fun for you and your dog. Reserve a time
each day to spend time training your dog. Keep the training session short,
maybe 20-30 minutes. Pick a time when the dog has calmed down and is
receptive to the lessons.

Somethings That Point To Arthritis In Your Dog!

I just come back from the vet today and found one of my dog has arthritis. Although she is 15 years old, the vet stated that it, like any disease can occur at any age.

The symptoms appear to be mild and we are trying aspirin for now. Some of the symptoms are:

Difficulty jumping into the car and onto the bed
A slight limp in the back leg

She still tries to act like a puppy and enjoys wading in the cool streams we have around here. We are trying aspirins for now as this may be the safest approach for her age.

Alway check with your veterinarian before giving your dog any medication.

Let us know about your dog
